A Voyage of Hope

Out of adversity has come a new piece of musical theatre, A Voyage of Hope, which is being staged at the Kaiapoi High School auditorium later this month, (July 22 & 23).

A modern take on the old Noah’s Ark story, A Voyage of Hope is the work of Kaiapoi ceramic artists Frank Malone and Rachel Harre, who lost their popular Hilton St studio and gallery in the September earthquake. On September 4, the Fragments of Grace studio shook and ceramic art work for their Christmas show was smashed.

They have now put their talents to new use, not only writing and producing the play but also making costumes, writing lyrics and recording a CD, (on sale after the show).

“We want people to leave with the knowledge that whatever life throws at them, be it earthquakes or a jolly big flood, they can take that big breath and rebuild their lives – it won’t be the same as before but there is still a future, there is still hope!” says Frank, who has written both music and lyrics for the show about the trials of being the wife of Noah.

Not just a musical, this innovative production starts with a movie and is performed by both Rachel and Frank.

Sad and funny, the play ends with an exhibition of their artwork. They hope it will lift the spirits of those affected by the earthquake as it has positive messages of recovery as well as having lots of laughs.

Tickets $15 at Take Note, Williams St, Kaiapoi and Kaiapoi I-site, opposite Blackwells or phone 3127486.
