This month’s makeover goes to Jacqui Jeffrey, of Kaiapoi. Jacqui and her family live next to the New World site and have been enduring weeks of earth compacting. A mother of three, Jacqui says the family home constantly shakes as a result of the work, between 8am and 6pm on week days and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. “It’s probably like a four pointer most times. It can go to three. There’s a good rattle when it starts off then it goes to a constant shake. You end up feeling seasick – it’s very nasty.” Lisa at Vogue Kaiapoi Hair Spa invited Jacqui to this well-deserved makeover.

Jacqui had been colouring her own hair and the ends were quite dark. As she had some grey hair through the top and sides, Merran at Vogue Kaiapoi Hair Spa decided to do a full head of foils to break up the colour and make an overall lighter look.

The re-growth area was coloured with a chocolate colour, which was a shade lighter than the ends. The foils were rinsed out and a toner applied to make them a cool soft caramel colour.

Jacqui has naturally curly hair but over-colouring had dried it out and made it fluffy. Merran cut two inches off the length and layered the hair using a channeling technique, which encourages natural curl and helps it to sit softer without any bulky areas.

De Lorenzo Create Curl was applied to the hair, sections were twisted and the hair was dried with a diffuser. This dries the hair slower, without making it fluffy.

Merran used Allevi8 Shine Serum to smooth the hair and add shine.

Vogue Kaiapoi Hair Spa also applied Jacqui’s makeup to complement her look.

Clothes and jewellery were from Blackwells Department Store, Kaiapoi.

Dear essence,

 It has been a difficult time for us. Our kids, aged 6, 4 and 2 years, sometimes say things like ‘I wish we didn’t have to live here’. We try to make jokes about the machine they call ‘the shakey shake’, but it has been very trying.

 I’ve had a million things to do, but when I got the text saying ‘how would you like to have a makeover?’ I decided to go for it. I’m so pleased I decided to do it because it was just so nice.

 At the start of the day, I was feeling awful but by the end of it I was thinking ‘this is so good’! I’d just like to extend a big thank you to everyone at essence and Vogue Kaiapoi Hair Spa, especially Merran and Lisa. I really appreciated this opportunity and I’m so pleased with the new look.
